The Science Museum

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Hello!

I’ve just come back from the (National?) Science Museum and if I’m honest it was a bit of a mixed bag.

Great bits
There were some great bits like the huge weird wheel thing in the main entrance and the space exhibition was great.

Launchpad was also very good - a kids interactive bit in the basement. It had two unconnected satellite dishes as either end of the room which you could speak to people through despite the distance. There was also an amazing black concave semi-sphere that when you put your hand in it produced a 3D reflection of it coming back at you. You could shake it’s hand!

Not-so-great bits
It was very busy - my fault really for going on a Saturday but I had to queue for lots of exhibits and then felt pressured by bratty kids while on them.

I found the body section was a bit disappointing despite being pretty interested in Biology.

Some bits were very boring like the marine section with lots of models of boats.

So I’d recommend checking it out, but perhaps go without high expectations. And not on a Saturday .

Silent Disco at the Tate Modern

Friday, October 12th, 2007

Horray! Today I took part in a silent disco flash mob at the Tate Modern. [A silent disco is like a disco but people listen to their own music through headphones. A flash mob is a secret event where people quickly come together in a public place and do something funny to the general surprise or confusion of the public].

It was great! I met with some friends before hand then we assembled in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern, right where The Crack was being displayed. You could see there were more excitable people than normal, many with Ipods at the ready. Then at 7pm sharp a cheer went up and everyone started to dance.

It was a good atmosphere, everyone giggling and dancing around. Every now and then a huge cheer spread across the crowd. I found the strangest bit was when the song on my music player would end, so I would stop dancing and expect everyone else to do the same but of course they all carried on.

There were loads of people watching who had just been enjoying the gallery and they seemed to be enjoying the spectacle which was great. I’m definitely going to keep my ear to the group about future ones.
